He was born April 3, 1922, in Weston, the son of Charles L. and Fredericka "Freddy" Wernsman Ambrose. He married Eloise Huth on Nov. 11, 1949, in Gibson City. She survives.
Also surviving are six children, Deborah (David) Decker and Charles Ambrose, both of Bloomington; David (Judi) Ambrose and Paul (Robin) Ambrose, both of Normal; Mark (Eva) Ambrose, Canton, Mich.; and Steve (Valerie) Ambrose, Bloomington; 14 grandchildren, Vince Ambrose, Melissa Schellenberg, Deann (fiancé Nathan Karplus) Ambrose, Audra (Daniel) Stolzoff, Donnie Ambrose, Walker Ambrose, Elizabeth Ambrose, Reed Decker, Scott Decker, Nicole Ambrose, Ben Ambrose, Michael Ambrose, Derek Ambrose and Claire Ambrose; eight great-grandchildren and a brother, Lawrence (Karen) Ambrose, Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Francis "Van" Ambrose and a sister, Barbara Kimble.
He served in the U.S. Army with the 501st Parachute Infantry during World War II. He received the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Victory Medal and the Army Commendation Ribbon.
