SSG. Ret. Darlene Zoe Wright James Smedley, 44, of 109 Gallop Place, Newport News, died Saturday, October 12, 2002, at the Hampton Veterans Medical Center. Darlene attended school in Portsmouth and graduated from Manor High School in the summer of 1976. She attended Norfolk State University and then entered the U.S. Army in the fall of 1977. After 18 years of military service, she retired and made her home in Newport News, Va., where she was a member of the Colossian Baptist Church, 856 Old Fort Eustis Blvd. After her military career, she attended St. Leo College, and she graduated from Kee Business College in Newport News, Va. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Newport News, she was a school bus driver for the City of Williamsburg, she worked for the Law Library for the City of Newport News and she worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Eustis, Va.

She is survived by two daughters, Natasha K. James and Candida S. Smedley; one son, Lee Ray Smedley of Newport News; two grandchildren, Jazmine B. Bradham and Tyshawn C. James; her mother, Delilah C. Wright of Portsmouth, Va.; her father, Clarence E. Wright Jr. of Newport News; aunts, Lilly Ferguson and Dollie Wilkinson of Norfolk, Mildred Davis of Portsmouth and Antoinette Norman of New York; uncles, Gilbert M. Blakes of Pittsburgh, Pa., and James Chester and Paul Wright of Norfolk; one sister-in-law, Karen Wright of Virginia Beach; one niece, Cimone N. Wright; one nephew, Pierre A. Wright; and many cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, at 109 Gallop Place in Newport News.

Funeral services will be held 9 a.m. Thursday, October 24, 2002, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601 27th Street, Newport News, with Chaplain Andre Pierce officiating. Burial will be in Quantico National Cemetery with full military honors.

Relatives and friends are asked to assemble at 109 Gallop Place, Newport News, by 7 a.m. on Thursday.
