Jonathan Lossing was the son of Henry George Lossing and Martha Nichols.

On December 28, 1851, Jonathan married Louisa Day. Jonathan enlisted in Company B, 8th Michigan Cavalry on December 12, 1862. He was captured on November 18, 1863 in Knoxville, Tennessee and sent to Andersonville Prison. He died March 29, 1864 of Pneumonia.

Jonathan and Louisa had children: Miles Vernon, Henry E, Charles Foster, and Fredrick Alfred.
