Franklin A. Smith was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania, the son of Emanuel G. (d. 1839) & Elizabeth Newcomer Smith. He never married and presented himself as an unusually literate man. In 1860, he was a miller living in Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County. He stood 5' 4" tall and brown hair and blue eyes.

He enlisted in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, May 8, 1861, with Co. H, 7th Pa Reserves (36th Pa Inf). Captured at the battle of the Wilderness May 5, 1864, and incarcerated at Andersonville where he died. Death dates of July and August are also reported in his service records.
