There has been some online confusion between the various George W. Beans of Bethel, Belfast and East Livermore, Maine. In the early 1800s it was common to name boys with first and middle names of "George Washington." In addition "Bean" is a common Maine surname. So there were many George W. Beans in Maine, and at least four Maine soldiers of this name.

According to the town history of Livermore, Maine, the George W. Bean of that town served in the 8th Infantry as a musician, and died in the Andersonville prison. Military records agree with the town history.

There appears to be no surviving record that conclusively shows who George's parents were. George's enlistment records says he was born in Fayette, Maine, in 1817. He was likely the son of Smith Bean and his wife Jedidah Bumpus, who married and resided in Fayette, until they relocated to East Livermore in the 1830s. In 1839 Smith Bean, Samuel Richardson (George's future father-in-law) and ten other men formed a company to build the first bridge across the Androscoggin River at Livermore Falls. The 1858 landownership map shows G. W. Bean lived within a couple households of S. Bean.

According a marriage notice, on November 26, 1839 George married Charlotte W. Richardson of Livermore Falls. George worked as a carriage maker, and had a shop in that village.

An obituary notice showed their one-year-old daughter, Lura Maria, died in August 2, 1842. The census shows the other three children: George B. born about 1842, Emma J. born about 1846, and Eva born about 1860.

George enlisted September 7, 1861, and died in prison on August 24, 1864.

George's daughter Eva died December 15, 1864. No records were found of the son George B. after he registered for the draft in 1863.

In the 1870 census Charlotte and Emma appear living together in East Livermore, with no additional children. Emma later married John Carver. Charlotte lived with her married daughter in Somerville, Massachusetts. Emma preceded Charlotte in death.

Note: Smith Bean died between 1878 when he filed a deed, and 1880 when his widowed wife appeared in the 1880 census in Kansas living with their married daughter Harriet Doyen. Jedidah has a findagrave memorial in Kansas. This memorial is not linked to Jedidah as it is not proven she was George's mother.
