Charles' mother was Frances "Fannie" Middleton Branson. In later 1919 Fannie deserted her family and was never seen again. Her grave remains unlocated. His father was Henry Columbus Branson who died in Jan 1921. At that time Charles and five or six of the youngest siblings were parceled out to orphanages and relatives.
