In 1860 Martha (age 15 according to the census) was living in Walker Co. AL with her parents Thomas W. Ashby and Mary Ann Butler and six siblings. Thomas W. Ashby's parents are unknown; Mary Ann Butler, born Jan. 28, 1825, was the daughter of Ephraim Butler and Mary Mariah Brown. By 1870 Thomas Ashby had died (or disappeared) and his widow and children were living with (or near) her father Ephraim Butler and his second wife Julia Emily Veazey Goodger Butler in Franklin Co. AL. Within a year or two Martha and other members of the family had moved to Itawamba Co. MS.

Martha's children are believed to have been born in Itawamba Co. MS. She moved to Louisiana with her daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Wiley Bruce, about 1900.

Her son Rev. Adolphus (A.D.) Ashby married Mattie Bell Bruce, daughter of James Monroe Bruce and Lydia Christian. Adolphus and Mattie are buried in Blanchard, Caddo Parish.
