Obituary:
The Douglas County News, Thursday, March 6, 1884, page 4, col. 1.
DIED.—On Sunday, March 2d, at his home in Ida, Mr. Wm. Lyons. The immediate cause of his death was wounds received in the army. The funeral took place on Monday and the remains ere interred in the Ida Cemetery. The deceased leaves a wife, five sons and one daughter to mourn his loss.
Of interest:
Lake Charley Cemetery sits upon land once owned by H. H. Brown, father of Grace Brown - who was the second wife of Edmund S. Lyon, youngest son of William Lyon.
Parents of Wm. S. Lyon: Aaron Lyon and Joanna Hatfield, both of New Jersey.
NOTE: findagrave memorial #7276785 for Aaron Lyon has erroneous information. Namely linking Aaron Lyon b 1769 as the son of Mattaniah Lyon. This is proven to be untrue. This William Lyon's paternal grandfather is Capt. David Lyon .
Mattaniah Lyon did have a son named Aaron Lyon born in 1759 -- both Mattaniah and his son Aaron Lyon (1759-1833) were Rev. War Patriots (see DAR Patriots Mattaniah Lyon #A208275 and his son Aaron Lyon #A208276). Aaron Lyon (1759-1833), son of Mattaniah has his own wife and children - and family history - see findagrave memorial #9444707.
Both of Wm. S. Lyon's grandfathers served in the Revolutionary War - his father's father: Capt. David Lyon (NJ) (1745-1802); his mother's father: Lieut. Aaron Hatfield (NJ) (1739-1797). These relations can be proved through New Jersey probate records, DAR and SAR records and newspaper articles of the time.
There are several unmarked graves next to or near William Lyon. It is supposed they are family members, but there are no records to confirm (or deny) this.
Two of Mr. Lyon's sons, Baker Woodruff Lyon and John Peters Lyon, also served in the Civil War. Per Pension records Baker W. Lyon served in Co. E 121 OH, Co. A 20 OH INF, Co. A 194 OH INF, Co. F 136 OH INF. John P. Lyon enlisted as drummer, 5 days before his eleventh birthday and served with his father in the 81st (Per Pension records Co. G 81 OH).
William Lyon was administrator of his father's (Aaron Lyon 1769-1854) will which was written in 1847. Siblings mentioned said will:
Susan (Lyon) Norris m Samuel Norris;
James Lyon (assumed to have died by 1847 - his share to (2) daughters);
Aaron Woodruff Lyon m1 Elizabeth (Agnew) Lyon M2 Cara (Hutchins)Lyon;
Mary (Lyon) Crane m Charles Crane;
David Lyon died at age 47, buried next to parents;
Elizabeth Ann Lyon;
Joan (aka Joanne Blanchard) (Lyon) Bryant m George Bryant
