Mary Freelove Atchison, the daughter of Judson and Lavinia Hand, was born at Carrolton, Missouri, October 26, 1870. She departed this life at the Good Samaritan Home in Phillipsburg, Kansas, October 27, 1959, at the age of 89 years and 1 day.

She came to Kansas in 1880 with his parents, brothers, and sister, and the family settled on a farm near Kirwin.

In 1889 she was united in marriage to William Henry Atchison, who preceded her in death on December 22, 1941. To this union four children were born, all of whom survive except Bertha who preceded her in death in 1916.

Mrs. Atchison had lived in the community practically all of her life. She and Mr. Atchison resided on a farm northwest of Kirwin until they bought a home on the old Mill Road which is now enclosed in the Kirwin dam area. A few years after her husband's death she moved to Kirwin where she resided until her health failed. She then moved to Phillipsburg and resided with her grandson, DeVaun Adams and his wife who cared for her until about five months ago when she entered the Good Samaritan Home.

Sometime after her marriage she became a member of the Congregational church and was a faithful and active member until the Congregational and Methodist churches in Kirwin merged and she became a member of the Kirwin Methodist Church.

She was one of the pioneers in the community and a few years ago was elected "queen" of the Old Settler's Day. Her friends were many, as she found time to be neighborly and to minister to those about her, who were in need. She was a good neighbor, a good citizen, and she evidenced her faith in her Master by serving Him and doing good to others. "Her works do follow her" and many there are who rise up to declare the memory of her they cherish as being a Blessed One.

Surviving relatives are her children:
Mrs. Minnie Adams of Kirwin
Thomas and Lloyd Atchison of Lakewood, Colorado
Sister Hattie Atchison of Hampton, Iowa
Sister Frances Sharp of Okmulgee, Oklahoma
Sister Nellie Brown of Hot Springs, Arkansas
Brother Charles Hurd of Okmulgee, Oklahoma
Brother Edward Hurd of Okmulgee, Oklahoma
8 grandchildren 7 great grandchildren

Crossing the Bar Poem appears next in the obituary.

Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, October 29 at the Methodist church in Kirwin with Rev. Little officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Russell McFadden and Mrs. Jim Lemon with Mrs. Frank Townsend accompanist.
