Pioneer Resident of County 85 Years.

Thomas Stanley COX, son of Thomas and Sadie Cox, was born in Deer Creek township, Phillips county, Kans. , on Dec. 17, 1890 and passed from this life in the Phillips county hospital on May 8, 1976 , at the age of 85 years and 5 months.

He grew to manhood and spent much of his adult life on Elmwood farm which was homesteaded by his father in 1872. He and his family moved to Agra in 1948 and then to Phillipsburg in 1954. Stanley was proud of his pioneer heritage and attended every Old Settler's Day celebration in Kirwin since that celebration was first begun.

He was married to Lillian Mae KANE Dec. 25, 1923 . Four children were born to them. They are a son, Leslie, of Santa Maria, Calif.; a son, Morris, who was killed in an industrial accident in 1962; a daughter, Mrs. Carol Pratt of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and a daughter, Mrs. Darrell Redinger of Phillipsburg.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, his sister, Mrs. Anna Simpson, as well as his son, Morris.

He was a life-long member of the Methodist Church , having served actively in the church at Kirwin, with membership transferred to Agra and then to the United Methodist Church of Phillipsburg. Following his retirement from a life of farming, he remained busy with his garden and his hobbies of painting, working with wood and fishing. He valued his family and his friends. On April 28, he suffered a stroke from which he was unable to recover. Those who remain to mourn his loss are his widow, Lillian; his sister, Mrs. Fannie Townley; his three children and their families, Mrs. Irene Cox and family and his many community friends. His remaining family includes 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, May 11 at 10 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Glenn C. Weinert officiating. Special music was furnished by Fred R. Henrichs with Helen Witmer as accompanist.

Casket bearers were Lloyd Frans, Ralph Power, Raymond McKown, Frank Hahn, F. D. Andrews and Herman Behringer. Interment was in the Kirwin Cemetery .
