Abts, Cleo Joseph
Cleo Joseph Abts, 65, of Blair, Wis., and formerly of Fountain City, Wis., died Thursday, March 22, 2001 at the Grand View Health Care Center in Blair.

Cleo was born April 7, 1935 in Fountain City, the son of Dora (Rothering) and Emil Abts. He attended Cotter High School for three years and graduated in 1953 from Fountain City High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56. He married Maureen "Peggy" Madder on July 7, 1956.

He worked for the Buffalo County Highway Department until his retirement in 1991.

Cleo was a member of the Fountain City Volunteer Fire Department and was everyone's favorite bartender at the Golden Frog Supper Club, both for many years.

He is survived by Peggy; four sons, Robert (Tracy) of Fountain City, Greg of Solon Springs, Wis., Dan (Judy) of Fountain City, and Paul (Tina) of Virginia Beach, VA; a daughter, Julie (Roger) Loewenhagen of Independence, Wis; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two brothers, Allen of Fountain City and Nathan (Mary Kay) of Green Bay, Wis.; and five sisters, Ethel (Bill) Kelley of Mesa, Ariz., Vera (Ken) Kafer and Janice Reuter, both of Winona, Mary Jane (Lyle) Bohlinger of Fountain City, and Sister LaVonne of LaCrosse, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Audrey and Margie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fountain City, with Rev. Douglas Charles Robertson, celebrant. Interment will be at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fountain City.

Friends may call at the church after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Pallbearers will be Robert, Greg, Daniel, Paul and Christopher Abts and Nicholas Loewenhagen.

In light of the season of Lent, in lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to the Alzheimer's Association.
