Captain Sheble spent his life commanding steamboats on the Mississippi River. At one time, he owned 24 steamers, and he taught Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) how to pilot one of them. Clemens' classic novels, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, were both written on Captain Sheble's steamers. During the American Civil War he engaged in conveying troops and supplies for the Union Army. He was with General Canby at the surrender of Mobile and with General Grant at the siege of Vicksburg.
