Former Bozeman resident James Curdy died July 3 at the Marcus Daly Hospital in Hamilton. He was 99.

He was born at Streator, Ill. On July 27, 1890, to James and Maggie McCurdy. His mother died Oct. 11, 1894, and his father left for Montana to find employment. A month later, the children came to Montana on the train by themselves to the west end of the Bozeman tunnel. Curdy later followed the same trade as his father, working as an engineer in the Aldredge, Electric and Roundup mines.

He married Emma Mary Christie of Bozeman on Nov. 19, 1912, in Bozeman and a year later they homesteaded at Miles Creek, north of the Livingston-Bozeman area. The family moved to Bozeman in November 1936 and farmed in the Gallatin Valley.

In January 1948, the family and son Everett moved to the Bitterroot. The elder Curdy’s moved back to Bozeman in 1966 where he worked as a custodian at the Grand Avenue Christian Church. His wife died Feb. 1974.

In 1980, he married Grace Biggs and they resided in Bozeman until she died in February of 1986. He moved back to the Bitterroot where he lived until the time of his death.

He was a storyteller who enjoyed telling the tales of the past, especially the time he met President Theodore Roosevelt at the dedication of the Gardiner entrance to Yellowstone Park.
