Georgia Governor. President of the Georgia Executive Council. Delegate to the Georgia Provincial Congress. Patriot. Colonel of the Richmond Militia District. Physician. Justice of the Peace. Served in Colonel George Walton's Chatham Militia during the British Invasion of Savannah in December 1778. He was captured and imprisioned on the British Prison Ship, HMS Whitby. In February 1780, Georgia's governor, Richard Howley, was sent by the Georgia Executive Council to represent the state in the Continental Congress. The Council then designated George Wells as Governor of Georgia, but several days later he became the second Georgia Governor to be killed by a Tory while in office. (The first being Button Gwinnett) Dr. Wells was killed in a duel with Tory, Major James Jackson. Both men were wounded in the duel but Dr. Wells was the only man to succumb to his wounds. The burial location of Dr. Wells is unknown, lost to history.
