Iva M. Barkley, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at her home in Arkansas City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 29, 2005 at the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joyce Daniel officiating. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Arkansas.

A memorial has been established with the Barkley Endowed Scholarship Fund at Cowley College. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Iva was born in Clarmount, Calif., the daughter of George Robb and Maude Titterton Barkley. She attended schools in Arizona, Oklahoma and graduated from Wellington High School.

After graduation, she came to Arkansas City to make her home with Dr. H.M. and Olivette Strickland and attended the Arkansas City Business College. Iva's first secretarial position was with Attorney George Stanley, Dr. Strickland, and Attorney Earl Wright.

In 1942, Strother Field was to be built and Iva was the second civilian to work on the field, a secretary to the Corps of Engineers. After the field was activated, she was transferred to the Station Hospital. In 1946 she left the field to work as an executive secretary for the New Era Milling Company, from which she retired after 25 years.

Iva was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Bahruth Circle, a charter member and Past President of Chapter E.R. of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a long time member of the Betty Bonny Chapter of the D.A.R, which merged into Peleg-Gorton Chapter.

She is survived by her two sisters Dorothea and Juanita Barkley of the home; brother-in-law Robert W. McMillan of Burbank, Calif.; nephew-in-law Joseph A, Martin of Tucson, Ariz.; two nephews; three great nieces, three great-great nephews and one great-great niece.

Iva is preceded in death by her parents, special friends Dr. H.M. and Olivette Strickland, brother Sydney Barkley and his wife Helen, sister Margaret Barkley McMillan, niece Alza Lee Martin and great nephew John Lawrence Martin.
