Laura Althea Thompson was born at Alexander, Genesee, New York, and August 3, 1834. She was the daughter of George and Lucia Thompson. They settled in Cottonwood, Utah.

Laura Althea was a schoolteacher and taught many seasons before she was married. The schoolhouse was a one-room log house in Mill creek. It was located at 4800 South and 10th East in Salt Lake.

She married Archibald Gardner on the 3rd day of March 1852. She was his 4th wife.

She served the Relief Society as President or counselor for 27 years. She was called to move many times. She resided in West Jordan, Taylorsville, Spanish Fork, and Big Cottonwood. While living in Spanish Fork she ran a small store.

Laura Althea was capable, trustworthy, refined, dignified and kind. She loved young people very much. They loved to go to her home. She was impartial to her husbands other children. They were one big happy family. No bickering or quarreling. She was the mother of 11 children, three of whom died in infancy and two in their teens. The other children lived to raise their own families, to follow her counsel and advice, and to praise her name.

Laura had been troubled with a bad cough for some time, thinking a change of climate might do her good; she went to Star Valley, Wyoming. She was given every consideration, but her condition grew rapidly worse and she died July 10, 1899.
