He was born Jan Pawel Fydryk, in Poreby, Sanok, Rzeszow, Poland shortly after the death of his father. His parents were Pawel Fydryk (1845-1894) and Domicela Fydryk Zubik 1864-1924. In 1912, his mother saw all the signs of WWI, and didn't want him involved. So she sent, her 16 year old son with $12 in his pocket, to friends in America. It wasn't until after the War that census takers Americanized his name to Frederick. John was talented beyond belief.
He could play 7 instruments by ear, never had a lesson in his life. He was a fantastic dancer and passed this onto his children, and they theirs. He was a self taught engineer on the railroad. He could look at an automobile, and fix anything with first glance, an ability passed on to his son and grandsons.
