Lotz, a bachelor resided at the Shamrock Boarding House. He had been in failing health in recent years.

His mother died when he was three, and he was adopted and raised by a Lutheran minister, Karl and Louisa Lotz. He traveled like a character actor and piano player with the Harry Haverstock tent shows before settling in Olney in 1937.

Until poor health restricted his activities, Lotz was an enthusiastic golfer and won several tournaments in the early days. He was a member of the First Methodist Church.

Lotz had one living relative, a half-sister, Mrs. Amelia Feldman of Topeka, Kansas.
