FUNERAL TODAY FOR S T. WOOD, 76, TEXAN MANY YEARS
Cattleman made Home on Chianti Ranch Until Two Years Ago, Mississippian

Another of the early day cowmen, who knew the Southwest, particularly West Texas in the time when that section's future as a beef-producing area was in embryonic stage, passed from the Highland community with the death, Wednesday night, of S. T. Wood, 76, retired ranchmen, whose Chianti Mountain place was one of the best known of this section. Mr. Wood had been in ill health about two years, since he underwent a serious operation in El Paso.

TO TEXAS WHEN CHILD
Pontotoc, Miss, was the birthplace-July 14, 1867--of the farm boy S.T. Wood, who was brought to Texas when he was only seven. His parents lived a year in Coryell county and, later, in Brown county. When he was eighteen, young Wood went to Tom Green county as a cowpuncher for V P Cattle Co., northern firm operating in the San Angelo country.

At a Water Valley community dance in about 1889 Wood met Miss Mattie Doran whose family had lived not far from Wood's in Brown county. The Dorans had gone to Tom Green in 1887. The couple married December 22, 1891, and for the next quarter of a century worked and prospered in Sterling and Tom Green counties. For an 8 year period Mr. Wood was sheriff and collector in Sterling county, then, in,1909, went into the sheep business in Crockett county, maintaining their home in San Angelo. Their three children were born in Sterling City.

LIVED IN MARFA TWO YEARS
In 1917 the Woods bought the old J. A. Pool place of thirty-six sections, in the Chianti country forty-five miles southwest of here. They operated there from 1918 until two years ago when the place was leased to Russell Menzies. Their son, Doran, operated the place with them in recent years. Since they leased their home place the Woofs have lived at El Paisano Hotel where they increased their circle of friends. Recently they bought the C. K. Smith property, moving there in January.

Well known in the business district, Mr. Wood delighted in telling of the olden days when he made his start as a cowpuncher, progressing through the years as a cowman who made his mark in the cattle business of the Highland area. During his active years as a cattleman he was a member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers' Association and the Highland Hereford Breeders' Association.

WIFE, SON, DAUGHTER SURVIVE

Mrs. Wood survives as do two OF their three children--Doran, who recently began operating a sheep ranch forty-five miles west of Roswell, N. M. and Mrs. Jess M. Cox of Del Rio, who lives with her husband on their place seventy-five miles west of Val Verde county town. There are two sisters--Mrs. Pearl Walden of Lubbock, Mrs. Della Puckett of Winters--and four half sisters and half brothers. The latter are: Mrs. Sallie West, Winters; Miss Thelma Wood, Winters; Byron (sic), Winters, Perry Wood, Plainview.

The funersal will be at 10:30 this morning at Young's Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilson Akins, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Pallbearers will be: Ernest Williams, Frank A. Barton, B. H. Davis, F. C. Mallard, J.D. Bunton, Hayes Mitchell.
