James was born to John and Margaret Bowman in Brownsville, PA. His family were successful merchants there.

He moved to Mansfield, OH about 1825 and to Bucyrus, OH by 1837 where he was a dry goods merchant.

His cousin, Elizabeth Moffett, a widow, died in 1839, leaving several children. It appears he took in her daughter Sallie (17) and son Samuel(15).

Three years later James (30) and Sallie (21) married. One year later (1843) their daughter was born but she died at almost 3 years old in 1846. Ten months later they had a son followed by another son in 1851.

James died some time after 1870 and Sallie died at 85 years old in 1906, both in Bucyrus.
