The Rev'd Father Brendan F. Forsyth, O.S.B., was born into a family of five brothers and four sisters. Two of his brothers, both now deceased, were dedicated members of Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, CO. Three of his sisters also entered religious life, and lived as B.V.M. nuns in the Middle West. Fr. Forsyth completed his secondary and college studies at Holy Cross Abbey School and Regis University in Denver. He made his profession July 11, 1936, and joined St. John's Abbey, Collegeville. He was ordained in 1940, and was assigned to the Abbey's Bahama missions, where he worked for 47 years, first as associate pastor at St. Francis Parish in Nassau, then as pastor until 1956. He was appointed Chancellor and Officialis of the Vicariate Apostolic of the Bahamas. In 1956 he entered Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and there received his Licentiate in Canon Law. He subsequently resumed his duties in the Bahamas, and was appointed Rector of Nassau Cathedral. In 1965 he was appointed Pastor of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Parish on the Grand Bahama, where he supervised the construction of the new church, largest in the diocese, thought to be architecturally one of the most outstanding. In 1987, he was stricken with a severe form of cancer, and returned to the Abbey for treatment. A concelebrated mass of the Resurrection was offered, and his remains were buried in the Abbey cemetery. (Paraphrased from an obituary by the Rev'd Father Jerome P. Theiseu, Abbot, St. John's Abbey).
