James Nelson Mills served in the Civil War (CSA) with the Nighthawk Rangers, Co. F, 17th VA Cavalry, and was wounded as flag bearer during the Battle of Monocacy (Frederick, Maryland), July 9, 1864. The flag was taken from Mills by Union troops and subsequently given to the Union commander, Maj. Gen. Lew Wallace. In 1880, Wallace wrote the book "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ." The Nighthawk Ranger flag is on display at the Wallace Study and Museum in Crawford, IN.
