Her father was the Reverend Austin Gray Smith of (25 Dec 1818 - 03 Oct 1877) of Fayetteville, Lincoln county TN. Her birth is recorded in the bible of her paternal grandfather, Francis Smith.

Her mother was Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Clanton, who married Austin G. Smith on 19 Mar 1840 in Fayetteville, Lincoln county TN.

The marriage announcement of Reverend McElree and "Mollie" Smith appeared in the Thursday, 02 Dec 1858 edition of the Fayetteville (TN) Observer, page 3: "In this county, Wednesday, 24th ult., by Rev. S.E. Wilson, Rev. R. L. MCELREE, formerly of Washington, Pa., and MISS MOLLIE E. SMITH, daughter of Rev. A. G. Smith, of this county."

McELREE. - Alvarado, Texas, Nov. 10. -
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary E. McElree, 82 years old, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. M. Spinks, at Dallas, Monday, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church. The services were conducted by the Rev. L. C. Collier of Burleson. Burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery. Mrs. McElree was the wife of the late Rev. R. L. McElree, Presbyterian minister, who died at Alvarado in 1906. The family came to Alvarado in 1881. Mrs. McElree is survived by the following children: W. L. McElree of Waxahachie, R. C. McElree of Dallas, Mrs. J. M. Spinks and Miss Blanche McElree of Dallas and Mrs. J. T Cooper of Waxahachie.
