John enlisted August 8, 1863 in Norfolk County, Virginia with 12th Virginia Infantry Company "B". At the battle of Ft. Drewry on 2/2/1864 he transferred to 6th Virginia Infantry, Company "D"; At the battle of Burgess Mill he became a POW and sent to City Point, Hopewell, VA.; met his brother, member of 5th Pennsylvania Calvary, while a prisoner there. 2/18/1865 he was paroled. On 3/24/1865 he again became a POW near Petersburg; sent to Fort Monroe.

John is the son of William and Susan Bloote Bain.

After the war he was a clerk and printer in Norfolk, Virginia. He went to Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1880; He was a member of Board of Alderman and Camp Walker, UCV.

He married Madora A. Reid of Spartanburg in 1882.
