Mahala (Jackson) Bunch, my great-grandmother, was born on Little Brushy Mountain in the camp area of Coalfield, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Samuel L. and Sarah Elizabeth (Justice) Jackson and the granddaughter of Rev. William R. and Mahala (Cooper) Jackson and Squire and Serah (Russell) Justice. (She was also a first and second cousin to my paternal great-grandmother, California [Jackson] Wilson; their fathers were brothers, and their grandparents, Squire Justice and Jane [Justice] Estes, were siblings.)

In addition to her four infant sons, my great-grandmother had a daughter who lived a few months after birth (she was likely born at Windrock in Anderson County). According to my great-grandfather Bunch's niece, Mellie Bunch (1909-2006), this infant daughter was born near the time of her birth. The 1910 Anderson County Census reveals that my great-grandmother was the mother of 3 children with 2 living (my grandfather, Freeman, and his brother, Winfred). The place of disposition for my great-grandparents' infant daughter isn't known.

"(Mrs. May McGlothin)

"Welch, Wade and Dewey Jackson attended the funeral of Mrs. Mack (Mahalia [Mahala] Jackson) Bunch in Clarksville, Arkansas, on Tuesday, January 6. Mrs. Bunch, who was 87 years old and their half-sister, grew up in Coalfield."

(*According to her nursing-home record, she was a resident of Mickel Nursing Home from January 12, 1975, until her death. Prior to this, she had lived in her rented home at 717 North Johnson Street into which she and my great-grandfather first moved no later than April 1935.**)

(**According to the 1940 Johnson County Census, they were living in the Johnson Street home on April 1, 1935. However, my great-grandfather's great-niece Frieda [Philpott] Morse [1924-2006] remembered that my great-grandparents were living in another home in the summer of 1936 and moved thereafter to the Johnson Street home before the end of the same year or sometime in 1937. Despite a possible census oversight, an October 22, 1937, paper in my great-grandfather's Spanish-American War pension file ["U.S. Social Security Act Application for Account Number"] indicates that they were living in the Johnson Street home at that time.)
