Helen was one of three daughters born to Ulrich Zurfluh, a master cabinetmaker from Switzerland, and his wife Anna (Tietze) Zurfluh, originally from Wilhelmshaven, Germany. Helen and her sisters were raised in Scranton, and Helen married Jay Niemeyer in 1928. They settled in Arkansas and had a daughter Barbara. Helen's husband Jay died in 1948, after which she remained in Arkansas and worked for Alcoa as a secretary before eventually returning to Scranton to stay at the home of her sister Frieda.
