Martin was the second of seven children born to Edward Murphy (1832-1907) and Elizabeth "Eliza" (nee Rooney) Murphy (1835-1888).
At least as early as age 23 he was a bricklayer and continued to be one until sometime after age 51 when he became a watchman for the city. In 1882 he married Anna Cooper and they lived most of their married lives on Dodier Street in St. Louis City and raised three children, Lizzie May (1883-1888), William James (1884-1930), and Mamie (1892-1929).
