S. W. Thornton was born in Madison County, Ohio on October 23, 1832 and died July 20, 1917, aged 84 years, 8 month, and 27 days.
On September 14, 1854, he was united in marriage to Sarah Larimer, daughter of Thomas and Mary Bryson Larimer, in Fayette County, Ohio. To this union eight children were born; Eva Jane (John) Swenson; William D. (Fannie Borders); Charles A.; Harry L.; Etta Mary ((T. R.)Lionberger of Twin Falls, Idaho; Mabel Claire (Albert) Lionberger of Hancock, Illinois; Katie McClellan of Denver, Colorado; and Lillie Betha Crosby of Kearney.
Shortly before the Civil War in 1859, Mr. Thornton, with his little family of three children, moved in a covered wagon from their Ohio home to Washington County, Iowa from which place he enlisted in Co. C., 8th Iowa volunteers, serving three years and seeing much active service, wounded in the Battle of Shiloh, lying in the hospital eight weeks at Memphis, Tennessee, taken prisoner at Atlanta, Georgia, he was at last honorably discharged and our county never had a more noble defender.
He engaged in the photograph business for a number of years in Washington, Iowa and then again gathering together his loved ones, he moved to Nebraska, taking a homestead north of Kearney on the divide, where they endured many years of hardships and privations such as only the early pioneers know of.
About twenty years ago he moved to Kearney, here his wife died and two years later he married Dallastine Hopkins, at Bloomingburg?, Ohio.
Five years ago he moved to Florida on account of failing health and a year ago to Alessandro, Riverside County, California at which place he died.
The remains were sent to Kearney and laid to rest beside the wife of his youth, July 25th. Services at the M. E. church, conducted by Rev. E. M. Furman.
All the children were present, except Eva (1895) and Charles (1877), who departed this life many years ago. In the 1880's he represented his district in the state legislature, and was an honored member of the G.A.R., which organization had charge of the funeral.
The pall bearers were J. F. Larimer, Freeman Merriman, Mr. Holmes, I. Smith, D. Pickrell and G. Wellden.
