Daughter of Elizabeth Esquivel of Macallen, Texas and brother of Nicholas and Ivan, Laura Garza, 25, was a Texan with a winning smile and an effervescent personality, an aspiring dancer who moved to Brooklyn in June 2008. When she disappeared from a nightclub six months later, on December 3, 2008, a massive search ensued, covering much of Orange County and parts of Sullivan and Rockland counties. On April 11, 2010 two all-terrain vehicle riders discovered her remains in an isolated field near Mount Cobb, Pennsylvania.
In January 2012, convicted sex offender Michael Mele pled guilty to manslaughter and evidence tampering in Laura's death and was sentenced to 23 years in prison
