(née Catherine Mary Sherman)

First Profession July 31, 1945
Motherhouse
Baltimore, Maryland

Catherine Mary Sherman was born in Baltimore on May 26, 1912, to Mary Catherine Funke and William Winfrid Sherman. She was the third oldest of five children; one brother died shortly after birth. In her autobiography Catherine lists her sisters: Naomi, Julia, and Ruth. Baptized at St. Paul Church, she entered St. Paul School in 1918 and was taught by Franciscan Sisters. At 8 years old, she received first Communion, and in 1923 she was confirmed by Archbishop Michael J. Curley.

On the afternoon of her confirmation day, Catherine's parents took her, dressed in her white dress and veil, together with her sisters, to Sacred Heart Convent "to attend the reception of the bonnet of a young girl aspiring to become a Notre Dame. The ceremony impressed me very much."

In 1925, Catherine transferred to the Institute of Notre Dame where her sisters Julia and Ruth were registered; because she did not want to go to St. Paul's alone, she became an IND student, too, graduating from the 8th grade in 1927. Catherine completed the two-year commercial course at the Institute and was graduated in June 1929.

After working for a year at Remington Rand Business Service, Catherine went to Butler Brothers as stenographer and clerk for the next 10 years. Her parents urged her many times to seek other employment in order to better herself.

In August 1942 Catherine entered the Candidature, where she completed her academic high school work (going to classes when she was 30 with much younger students) and one year of teacher training. Catherine entered the novitiate on July 14, 1944, receiving the name Mary Catharina. She pronounced her first vows on July 31, 1945, and made final profession on the same date in 1951. In 1957, the College of Notre Dame of Maryland awarded her a B.A. in history and social studies. Sister Catharine celebrated her diamond jubilee in 2005 at Villa Assumpta at the age of 93.

Between 1945 and 1969, Sister Catharine taught business subjects at Mount Carmel, Camden, N.J.; St Joseph, Rochester, N.Y.; St. James, St. Michael, and St. Andrew, Baltimore City; and St. Peter and St. Boniface, Philadelphia. For four years she was secretary to the Sisters' Council in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The years 1974 to 1977 brought a change in Sister Catharine's ministry. She joined the staff of the food kitchen at the College, and then became director of food services at Notre Dame Preparatory School.

From 1977 to 1989, Sister Catharine was on the staff of the archives/heritage department for the Baltimore Province of the Marianist Brothers. She served on their finance staff from 1989 to 1995.

During those same six years, Sister Catharine did archival work for her own province. One of her contributions was to work on the cemetery lists of the Baltimore Province, particularly those of the early years.

Sister Catharine became part of Marian Community at Maria Health Care Center in July 2005. Preparing to go to breakfast on April 27, she died unexpectedly at Maria Health Care Center.
