Shirley was born in Tacoma WA, daughter of Pearl (Angelo) and Harold T Mills. As a child she was a talented dancer and actress and the family moved from WA to Los Angeles to advance her career. She performed the role of Ruthie Joad in the film "Grapes of Wrath" in 1940. She had other movie roles as a teenager and performed as singer and dancer until the 1950's. She married Melvin Hanson in 1977.
