Stephen was the son of Wallace "Bill" and Bessie Patterson Gilstrap.

Stephen was a passenger in a 1962 Volks- wagen dune buggy driven by Furman E. Duncan, who lost control of the vehicle on SC Hwy 93 near Liberty and struck another vehicle. Both men died in the accident.
At the time of his death he was survived by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
His funeral was held Monday, June 12, 1972 at Rice's Creek Baptist Church.
Burial: West View Cemetery, Liberty.
