"Rev. Patrick J. Murphy Died Suddenly In Italy

Rev. Patrick J. Murphy, M. S., a native Ansonian who was ordained July 3, died yesterday about 15 miles from Rome, where with two other priests from the Gregorian University, he was bathing at the beach. The three priests had been sitting on the sand and as they entered the water Father Murphy collapsed, His two companions caught him and carried him to a first aid station where doctors worked over him vainly for two hours. It is believed Father Murphy suffered a sunstroke.
Father Murphy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Murphy of 261 North Main Street this city (Ansonia, CT USA) . A native of Ansonia, he was graduated from the Assumption Parochial School in 1917 and was Valedictorian of the Ansonia High School Class of 1921. In August of that year, he entered the La Sallette Missionary College at Hartford, This State, for his classical studies in preparation for the Priesthood. He was the valedictorian of his class there in 1925.
He was then admitted to the La Sallette novitiate at Bloomfield and a year later entered LaSallette Seminary at Altamont, New York. In October 1927, he was appointed to complete his studies at the Gregorian University in Rome. He was to have had one more year of study before beginning the missionary service for which he was preparing, and he and his Parents, Relatives, and friends were looking Forward [part of news article missing] .
News of the tragedy which had befallen the young priest reached here late yesterday afternoon when Rev. William P. Kennedy, Pastor of the Assumption Church, received a message through the Lasallette College at Hartford, requesting him to inform the priest's parents of their son's sudden death. It soon spread throughout the city and elicited hundreds of expressions of sympathy from friends of the family, especially among those who had been his schoolmates at the Assumption Parochial School. Father Murphy, as a young man in Ansonia, was known for his pleasant disposition. [Part of article missing]"
