William McCluney came over from Ireland and petitioned for land in South Carolina in November of 1772. He was granted 100 acres and then another 250 acres in 1785. He married Margaret Johnston and they appear to have lived their entire married life on the original land grant. They had 5 children. The children were Thomas McCluney b. 1777 & died 1855; James McCluney b. 1784 & d. 1853, William b. 1787 & d. ?; Margaret McCluney b. 1794 & d. 1871 and Samuel Pearson McCluney birth & death unknown but buried with his parents. William fought in the Revolutionary War and his service records are on file in the South Carolina Archives Department.
