Benjamin is the son of Francis, Jr. and Elizabeth Patterson Hudson. Born in Opelousas, Benjamin had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. He grew up learning the sugar business that his father had established.

Benjamin married Julia Anne Reed 01 May 1830. They were not married long as Julia died soon after and is buried here at South Bend Cemetery. Records are not complete but it appears she died about 1832. Benjamin then married Mary Ann "Annie" Gordy, 12 Mar 1833, in St. Mary Parish. Together, they raised 11 children. The youngest, a son named Richard, was killed at 15 in a hunting accident. They are:

Richard Hudson - b. 1834 - d. 1849
Elizabeth Hudson Gardner - b. 1839 - 1927
Caroline Hudson - b. 1842 - 1905
Charles Hudson - b. 1845 -
Francis Benjamin "Frank" Hudson - b.1847 d. 1919
Mary Ann Hudson - b. 1848 d. 1923
Florence Evelyn Hudson Mahon - b. 1850 d. 1936
John Gideon Hudson - b. 1853, d. 1880
Everett Hudson - b. 1855, d. aft 1880
Blount Robertson Hudson - b. 1858, d. 1889
Benjamin F. Hudson - b. 1859 - 1901

Benjamin served as Sheriff of Franklin, St. Mary Parish, for the term of 1832 - 1840. As his obituary reflects, he was loved by many and made a large contribution to the early sugar industry and to the area. He contributed to establishing three sugar plantations including South Bend, North Bend, and Midway. He built his home at Midway. His daughter Florence Mahon and husband James Clark Mahon, would later own controlling interest in South Bend and build their home there. Many of his family learned the sugar business from him.

I've added Benjamin's obit in photos as it's lengthy and difficult to type exactly as written. I want to share it with all so against Findagrave rules I've added it in photos as many do. Most news publications from these older times do not allow you to copy and paste obits here on Findagrave. Maybe that rule needs to be amended for that purpose.

Benjamin is my Gx2 Grandfather.

In loving memory of you....
