Now we also can confirm Walter Gunther was born 1918 on 30th January to parents Walter Joel Gunther Sr. and Julia G. Murphy in Malden, Massachusetts. He graduated Boys Catholic (Malden Catholic) in 1937, attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA. and enlisted in the US Army in November 1941. He volunteered for the Paratroopers, and trained at Camp Croft, South Carolina, Camp Toccoa, Georgia, and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, to name a few.
Lt. Gunther met and married his wife Mary Bobb Farley, a U.S. Army nurse and in late August 1943 deployed to England for preparations for D-Day… Sadly Lt. Gunther was KIA on D-Day and is buried in Normandy, France. After his death he earned a Purple Heart Medal.
I am so honored to have learned these additional details about Walter Gunther; equally sad to know he gave up his life for his country too soon, too young. However, I am happy that I chose his marker to photograph on my visit to this cemetery that day. Now others will know more about a young man landing on the nearby shores who pledged to defend his country, French citizens, and in doing so sacrificed the family he left behind.
