Mrs. Mary Brown, widow of the late Thomas Brown, died early Sunday morning at the residence of Rev. Alex. Mackintosh, Nuuanu avenue. She was 88 years of age and possessed of her faculties to the last. Mrs. Mackintosh, her only daughter, is absent with Mr. Mackintosh in England. There are four sons—Godfrey, Cecil, Frank and Malcolm Brown. The first three were home at their mother's death. Mrs. Brown was greatly revered throughout her long sojourn in Honolulu. She passed a serene old age amidst the sunshine of universal affection that was the richly deserved reward of her amiable character.
The funeral took place Sunday afternoon from the family residence and was very largely attended. The remains, enclosed in a black casket, lay in the front parlor surrounded by the most beautiful floral offerings. The service was conducted by the Rev. Hamilton Lee of St. Andrew's Cathedral in a very impressive manner. The choir, Mrs. E. D. Tenney, Mrs. C. A. Elston, Mrs. E. W. Jordan, Messrs. T. Clive Davies, Chas. A. Elston and J. T. Irvine, under the direction of Organist Wray Taylor, sang very effectively two hymns: "Days and Moments Quickly Flying," and "Peace, Peace, Peace."
Among those present were: Bishop and Mrs. Willis, Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Atkinson, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Schaefer, A. S. Cleghorn, D. P. R. Isenberg, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Carter, Hon. Samuel Parker, Mr. and Mrs. Louisson, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Smith, Mrs. Robertson, Mrs. Waterhouse, Geo. S. Harris, Mr. and Mrs. C. Booth, Mrs. T. Sorenson. The pall bearers were the three sons of the deceased lady, Godfrey, Cecil and Frank Brown. Judge C. F. Hart, H. M. von Holt, F. W. Glade and A. St. M. Mackintosh. The remains were followed to Nuanu [sic] cemetery by a large number of friends on foot. The Rev. Hamilton Lee read the committal service."
