Joseph Maurice Vassar, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at his Lewiston home.

He was born June 4, 1920, to Clyde James Vassar and Alice (Ryan) Vassar at St. Joseph Hospital in Lewiston. He attended St. Stanislaus Catholic School and Lewiston High School, where he graduated in 1938.

Joe attended Santa Clara University in California prior to enlisting in the Army Air Force on June 25, 1942. He served with the 100th Bomb Group in Normandy, Ardennes, Northern France, and Rhineland. On Oct. 11, 1945, Joe received an honorable discharge.

After the war, he returned home to attend Washington State University in Pullman and was a member of the Beta Theta Phi fraternity. Following college, he worked for Stillings & Embry Florists in Lewiston.

Joe and Imogene Ione Webster were married Feb. 22, 1947, at St. Stanislaus Church in Lewiston.

In 1959, they purchased Stillings & Embry Florists. With their family, they owned and operated the business until retiring in 1984.

Joe was a lifelong member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. He was active in many civic groups. He was past president of the Lewiston Lions Club, a lifetime member of the Lewiston Elks, a lifetime member of the Northwest Florists Association, a charter member of the American Academy of Florists, a Master Florist of the FTD Professional Florist Institute, and a volunteer for St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.

His sister, Mary Isabelle Barkley; and five brothers, Oliver, James, Andrew, Vincent, and Thomas preceded him in death.

A vigil service will be held at 7 tonight at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston. The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lewiston.
