He began his employment with them in 1955, the same year he obtained his embalmer's license after graduating from California College of Mortuary Science in Los Angeles. He attended the National Foundation of Funeral Service School of Management in Evanston, Illinois and was active in special apprenticeship training programs. He and his wife were accomplished violinists and they belonged to the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra.
