He was the son of Joseph Kirk Clarkson & Mary Elizabeth Smith-Clarkson-Galyean. He was the brother of William Kirk Clarks,Maxon Clarkson and Louis DeVillers Clarkson.

By the age of 16, Charles and his brothers were orphaned and Charles lived with his Aunt for a time before wandering west to Texas and finally to Illinois earning his keep as a hired hand and farming. It is believed he never married.
