The DeRuyter Gleaner - Thursday, February 28, 1924 - page 4

Mrs. Sophronia Abbott, who had been in failing health for several months, died at her home in Elm ave. Monday, at 12:50. Her age was 82 years, 3 months, and 13 days. Mrs. Abbott was the daughter of George and Caroline Simons Hayes and was one of a family of ten children. She was born in the town of Cuyler, Nov. 12, 1841 and until she came to Homer had always resided in the vicinity of her birth.

She was married Dec 27, 1860, to George A. Abbott of East River, where part of their married life was spent. Eleven children were born of the marriage. The first born died in infancy, but the other ten children survive here with forty grandchildren and great-grand children, nearly all of whom reside in or near this county. Her husband died in 1905 and a few years after his death at the home in Cheningo, she came to the present home on Elm ave, with her daughter, Miss Amelia Abbott and since a year ago another daughter, Mrs. Jennie Hawyer, formerly of Truxton, had also made her home with them and had given devoted and loving care to the aged mother, and made the closing days of her life more comfortable.

Mrs. Abbott was a christian woman with an abiding faith in her Heavenly Father and her closing days were full of evidence of her trust in Him.

The surviving children are Kenneth and George Abbott of Cortland. Walter of Groton City, Fred of Fabius, Harry of Cincinnatus, Amelia Abbott and Mrs. Jennie Hawyer, who resided with their mother at the home. Mrs. Frank Seacord of the East Little York road, Mrs. Carrie Garner of Truxton, and Mrs. Arthur Bush of Freetown.

The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock and the remains will be deposited in the receiving vault of Glenwood cemetery to await burial in the Truxton cemetery.
