Arden Brown, 94, of Akron, Iowa passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010 at the Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 8, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Akron. Marie Lykken, Chaplain from Hospice of Siouxland will officiate. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery in Akron.
Arden Charles Brown was born December 22, 1915 on a farm near Adaville, rural Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Grant and Viola (Clarey) Brown. He attended Adaville Country School and graduated from Akron High School in 1934.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Tucker in August of 1939. They farmed briefly near Adaville. He worked as a salesman for Murphy Feed, Archer Daniels, Walnut Grove Feed and W.R. Grace and Company. He also sold fertilizer and chemicals for Sioux Fertilizer in Hawarden. In the early 50’s, he founded Farm Belt Feed and Supply in Akron. In 1976, Arden and his son Bob started Brown Fertilizer and Feed in Akron. He enjoyed working with people and was actively involved in the business well into his 80’s.
Arden played and managed baseball for some of the outstanding Akron teams of the 1940’s and 1950’s. He also played semi-pro ball for several area teams including Worthington, MN and Sioux Falls, SD. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, trap shooting, gun trading and dealing with antiques. In his later years, he wrote poetry and had two books of his poems printed. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. His favorite times were those spent with his family and at his cabin on the Missouri River.
He was longtime member of First Baptist Church in Akron, the National Rifle Association, the Akron Gun Club, the Vermillion Gun Club, the Akron Fishing Club, the Akron Commercial Club and the Plymouth County Park Board.
He is survived by three children: Carol of Corvallis, OR, Bob (Susan) of Akron, and Rich (Kristie) of Sioux City; five grandchildren: Wendi Bogard, Michael Brown, Chad Brown, Courtney Sanders, and Rachel Stahle; and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy on April 3, 1999; a twin brother, Armand; and a younger brother: Wayne.
