John & Mearna were swept away by a tornado that struck their farm home in Elk Precinct near Cornell, Rawlins Co. KS, leaving nothing but the cellar in the ground. The 5 children (ages 15 to 2 - Mildred, Martha, Elmer, Dean and Paul) were sent to the cellar, but John and Mearna hadn't gone down themselves yet when the tornado hit. It happened at night, which is probably why they didn't see it coming. A couple of the older kids climbed out of the cellar and ran to the neighbors for help. Mearna's body was found the next day a half-mile up the creek.
