Dustan was the son of Daniel and Roxana Walbridge. He married his wife Abbie (Hardy) Walbridge in 1860. Dustan and Abbie would have one daughter during their brief marriage: Nellie Florence Walbridge. Shortly after he enlisted in Company A, Vermont 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment on 01 Sep 1862. His military record was as follows:
Promoted to Corporal on 10 Dec 1862.
Promoted to Sergeant Major on 17 Jan 1864.
Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 21 Jan 1864.

It was during the Battle of Cold Harbor that Dustan was injured and forced to have his right arm amputated. Due to the grisly nature of the day and the deplorable conditions of battlefield surgeries, Dustan's arm became infected and he was sent to Washington to recuperate. However, his wounds proved to be fatal and he later died as a result.
