It was during the Battle of Cold Harbor that Dustan was injured and forced to have his right arm amputated. Due to the grisly nature of the day and the deplorable conditions of battlefield surgeries, Dustan's arm became infected and he was sent to Washington to recuperate. However, his wounds proved to be fatal and he later died as a result.
