Obituary: Weekly Tribune, Johnstown, Fri. 21 Oct 1898, p.5, c.4

Mrs. Susan Amelia Shryock, relict of the late J.K. Shryock, died at her residence at Wilmore on Sunday morning, October 16, 1898, after a long and painful illness of paralysis.
Mrs. was a daughter of Major Frederick Sharretts, and was born in Carlisle, Pa., in 1820, but the family afterward removing to Johnstown, and she was here married to Mr. Shryock in 1840, by Rev. Barnett, pastor of the Evangelical Church in the town at that time.

[The couple had 10 children, 3 died in childhood](10 children, 3 died in childhood.) Kate, wife of Alvin Evans of Ebensburg, died 12 years ago. The remaining children are: Mrs. G.M. Hedrick, of Polo, IL; Charles, of Wilmore; Mrs. Fes Lloyd of Ebensburg; Mrs G.M. Ferry, of Duquesne, PA; Miss Mary, of Wilmore, and Harry of Upland, NE.

Rev. E.A. Sharretts of Fowlersville, Penna.;
G.E.W. Sharretts of Smithburg, Maryland, and
Jacob R. Sharretts of Johnstown were brothers of the deceased and
Mrs I.P. Schwartz of Brooklyn, N.Y., her sister.

Mrs. Shryock and her family lived in Johnstown, where her husband, as heretofor stated in the Tribune was one of the pioneers in the iron industry, which today the welfare of the city is so largely indebted. He was also for a considerable time engaged on the mercantile business, but at one time lost his entire stock of goods by fire.
About 1863, the family moved to Wilmore, where for 19 years - from 1864 - with the exception of a short interval during the Administration of Andrew Johnson in 1868 - he held the position of postmaster of the town.
Mr. Shryock died 4 years ago last Feb., at which time his venerable spouse was ill from the effects of a paralytic stroke she had sustained 3 years before.
He was a brother of Wm. L. Shryock of the 8th ward, and was himself paralized for some time before his death.
Mrs. Shryock was ever a devout member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, a model wife, mother, neighbor, and friend, whose great object in social life was to raise her children to be good and useful members of society, and whose death was to her a welcome relief from painful bodily infirmities, she had so long and patiently endured. She had the consolation of seeing all her living children immediately before her death and calmly breathed her last breath, with a consciousness of a life well spent, and the fond expectation of an eternity of happiness of the brighter world beyond Death's dark river.

Funeral services were held at the house Wednesday morning, by Rev. J.S. Allen, Pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wilmore. Remains were conveyed to Ebensburg - the funeral procession in rigs overland - where interment was made in Lloyd's Cemetery, the burial place of Mr. Shryock.
