Gilbert was the 3rd child of Peter Currie and Jane McNiven of Islay, Argyll, Scotland. Gilbert was born Dec 28, 1851 according to his birth and baptism record(although his stone says Jan 1 1853)in Carnduncan, Kilchoman Parish, Islay, Argyll, Scotland. As a small child, he immigrated to Erin, Wellington, Ontario with his family in 1855. He lost his father the next year. His mother Jane remarried and the family immigrated to Lapeer Michigan in 1866.
Gilbert married Ellen Ross Oct 7, 1875 in Imlay City, Lapeer. They started their family in Burnside, Lapeer, moved to Clayton, Arenac and finally in 1895 to Richland, Ogemaw. Gilbert worked in the lumber camps and was also a farmer.
