DOVER — Wallace P. Nowak, 91, died after a long and happy life on Friday, April 30, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Wallace was born in North Walpole, N.H., on Sept. 28, 1918, to Paul and Sophie (Pickul) Nowak, the second of four children. Wally spent his childhood days in North Walpole, Alstead, and on the family farm in Acworth. He graduated from Vilas High School in Alstead in 1937. Enlisting in 1941, Wally proudly served as technical sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II. Of all the memorable events of this time, the most important was meeting and marrying the love of his life, Patricia Browning of Brewer, Maine. After his military service he attended and graduated from the University of New Hampshire.

During his working career, he was employed as an accountant by such local enterprises as Wentworth Hospital and D.F. Richard in Dover. He retired after many years at Ben's Auto Body in Portsmouth.

Always a devoted and fun-loving family man, Wally was also an avid square dancer, talented photographer, master carpenter, self-taught computer wizard and long-suffering Red Sox fan.

Preceding him in death were his beloved wife of 50 years, Patricia, his parents, his brothers Charles and Edward, his sister Amelia and his best friend, the last to cross before him, a four-legged Irishman named Murphy.

Already missing his wit, humor and tenacity are his children, Linda and her husband Spencer Struble, Judith Nowak, and Susan Knowles, his grandchildren Candace and her husband Douglas Gatlin, and Gregory Knowles, all of Dover. He will also be missed by his great-grandchildren, Ella, Eva, and Adam Knowles of North Berwick and Alexandria Gatlin of Dover. Also, a little redhead with a big collar to fill: "Duffy."

His family and friends are invited to come and celebrate his life on Wednesday, May 5, from 6-8 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home 621 Central Ave in Dover.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 6, at 11 a.m. at The Parish of The Assumption at St. Joseph's Church, 150 Central Ave. in Dover. Burial will follow in New St. Mary's Cemetery in Dover, where Military Honors will be rendered.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Fall Mountain Food Shelf, Box 191, Alstead, NH 03602, or the Society for the Protection of NH Forests, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord, NH 03301
