Jean E Purdy, 85 of Mount Vernon died Friday Dec. 12, 2003 at the Country Court Nursing home following an extended illness.
Jean was born June 25, 1918, in Gambier to Harry Vernon & Lenore (McGinnis) Fleming. She was a graduate of Gambier High School and the Mount vernon Business College. During World War II. Jean served as in the US Navy as a Petty Officer 1st Class in Washington D.C., working as a code breaker. When she later returned to Mount Vernon, Jean worked as personnel director at Mercy Hospital. In 1983, Jean retired from the Mount Vernon City Schools where she had been employed as a secretary for several principals. She was a member of the Gay St. United Methodist Church, and the RSVP quilters of Gambier. She enjoyed woodworking, creating stained glass, was an avid gardener, and a master seamstress. She was a proud and loving grandmother and after her retirement devoted much of her time to her grandchildren. Besides her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her first husband Floyd G Steinmetz in 1958; her second husband, William B Purdy in 1990; two sisters, Helen Warman and Ruth Perry; and two brothers, Harold Fleming, and baby Harry Fleming.
