Mary Jane was originally interned at Woodlawn Cemetery but now resides at Sandcreek Cemetery.
Mary Jane's older sister Kate married Maj/Dr George W. Bowen during the civil war. She died in Phillips co, Arkansas during child birth, while he was surgeon for a colored battalion. As far as is known, this child did not survive either. Hiram Adna Bowen, GW's brother, was also a Major and co-located with another colored battalion, at Ft Helena, AK.
After the war, GW Bowen married Mary Jane, next older sister. They had children, including Mary Belle Bowen, who married Reuben J. Hayden, Grandparents to John A. Justice. A Feb 1944 letter from Mary Belle to Margaret Hayden, mother to JA Hayden Justice, provides a narrative of the genealogy of the Hayden and Bowen families. This is the only place found that child birth was the reason for Kate's death in 1865. The date of her death is defined in a deposition by GW Bowen, where he explained his leave in Dec 1865 to Jan 1866.
GW's brother Adna married a close friend to Mary Jane and Kate Gertrude Thurber. After the civil war Adna moved to Nebraska where he was involved in banking and farming (he was an attorney), then later to Idaho, where he was highly respected.
Both families named a child after Kate Gertrude.
