VOLNEY G. CHAFFEE was born May 11, 1855, and died September 6, 1906, aged 51 years, 3 months, and 25 days. He was born in a little cottage on the same lot where stands the home in which he died. His death was caused by the serious accident which befell him Saturday afternoon, July 14, when he was dragged and run over by a loaded wagon. His injuries at the time were so serious that none of the physicians who examined him thought he could live. He improved slowly, however, and by last Tuesday was so far recovered that he was able to walk out some and even took a short ride into the country in a carriage. After his return Tuesday afternoon he was taken sick with something like cholera morbus. He seemed to grow rapidly worse and physicians were hastily called. They did all they could, but the patient suffered continuously from that time till death ended his pain Thursday morning. The final trouble resembled bright's disease and dropsy. He was married June 5, 1879 to mIss Deliah Overholser at Milledgeville. Five children were born to them and they, with the bereaved widow, remain to mourn the loss of husband and father. They are, Jessie, Henry, Christian, Ralph and Winnie. All live home except Jessie who is employed in Aurora. She was called home at the time of the accident to her father, but had returned to her work. She was hastily summoned Wednesday and arrived at noon Thursday. There are also two sisters living to mourn for Mr. Chaffee, Mrs. Elizabeth Lampman and Mrs. Sarah Hendrick. Three sisters have died. Mr. Chaffee was a member of the Methodist church. He was always interested in what was for the best for his family and neighbors, a kind husband and loving father. He held a membership in the M. W. A. and the Mystic Workers. He was never much interested in politics and never aspired to public office, but attended strictly to his business and his home. The funeral services were held in the M. E. church at 10:30 Saturday morning. Rev. J. W. McKitrick was the officiating clergy.... end of obit missing.
